Out in the Field

Chilly Morning in Guaranasia, MG visiting coffee farms Significant drought loss to this farm. Was expecting 1,000 bags and collected THREE! Also reasons for concern for the 2022/23 crop were also evident.

Boots on the ground in Brazil

On most farms I have observed premature budding and leaves forming on trees at the nodes due to the recent irregular rains of varied amounts. This is only the start of the dry season. The timing of next rainfall will be critical. If it rains again and there is a lack of follow-on rains the blossoming will be lost, similar to the problem that happened in October. The buds could also bake in the hot sun and turn black. There are some buds already with a black tip, which shows the flowering that had occurred aborted, representing a loss to the 2022/23 crop.

Brazil Variety Show

What a difference in yields from one variety to the next and resistance to drought.

July 1: Frosty Morning in Brazil Coffee Belt

The temperature readings during the night seemed like the coffee belt would be spared from any damage, but the morning light showed differently. By no means was it a heavy frost or medium damage but there was evidence of the cold on several farms visited yesterday between Guaxupé over to Mococa.

Day 2 of my third pandemic trip to Brazil to see the development of the 2021/22 crop and early indications for 2022/23 after recent rains.
