Three Views From The Field
#MatasdeMinas tour notes: three different views from a week visiting farms in eastern #MinasGerais: 1) very little coffee; 2) a medium amount (rather disappointing for the grower) and 3) an excellent crop. The third condition was the rarity. Very few farms had strong production.
Boots On The Ground in Minas Gerais: Mixed Bag for Coffee Production
After spending this week visiting farms in this forested mountainous region of eastern MInas Gerais with spectacular vistas, there were three conditions observed (1, 2, 3 at right):
1) Very little coffee 2) a medium amount but rather disappointing to the grower and 3) an excellent crop. The third condition was the rarity. Only a small fraction of the farms had areas of very strong production. The majority of farms fell between low to medium volumes of fruit developing on the trees despite a very promising flowering. 6-7 months of no rain sharply diminished prospects for a chance of a more bountful recovery following last years small output.
The return to rains has certainly improved the vegetative health. Farmers are hopeful for better results in 2023/24 but caution that it was from this point forward a year ago that conditions deteriorated and they are even more concerned about the escalation in costs. #coffee #brazil #greencoffee #matasdeminas #coffeefutures #hardfactsonsoftcommodities #marketanalysis
